    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.

    STIHL Quickstop®
STIHL chain saws are equipped with a chain stopping system designed to reduce the risk of injury in certain kickback situations. It is called a STIHL Quickstop® chain brake. The STIHL Quickstop® chain brake is designed to stop the rotation of the chain if activated by the operator’s hand or by inertia if the saw kicks back with sufficient force. In some working positions, the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake can be activated by inertia, stopping the chain within fractions of a second.

    Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

    Master Control Lever™
The Master Control Lever™ is an easy to use single lever, operating the choke, starting throttle lock and on-off switch. The operator must pull the throttle trigger before moving the Master Control Lever™ to the choke position.

    Winter/Summer Shutter
The Winter/Summer Shutter allows the carburetor to operate at optimum temperature year-round and helps to prevent carburetor icing when working below 50°F (10°C).

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chain saws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus additional chain braking feature (Q), STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chain saws.
* The actual listed guide bar length can vary from the effective cutting length depending upon which power head it is installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent saw with plenty of power Got this saw last Father's Day and what an excellent saw it is. The anti vibration springs make so you can run the saw all day if needed great design. The engine fires on the first or second pull every time and is a beast! Plenty of power for its 18inch bar and it's great on gas and bar oil. The Stihl engineers did their homework on this saw I can't say enough good things about it if you want a top notch saw you've found it. April 15, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great for all your needs. This is a great saw. It has enough power to cut almost all day long.. The only thing is that after about 50 cuts the chain does dull and will need to be replaced or sharpened. March 22, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by MS 291 I knew I needed a new saw for the compound so I headed downriver to Woodland Saw & Cycle. The guys there are top notch and have helped me many other times most recently in the purchase of a STIHL weed wacker. These guys provide great customer service. After chatting for a few minutes about the type of work I was and would be doing I was directed to the MS 291. Let me tell you; I could not be happier. This saw is a serious machine for what I need to do. No, I'm not a logger and no, I'm not wrestling the chain saw 8 hrs a day 5 days a week. But, I have dropped over a dozen 12-20" trees and this thing chews through them like butter. A reliable machine with power to spare. I am very happy with my purchase. March 6, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Saw This is my first saw, and I love this saw! It fires right up and runs awesome! Plenty of power with my 18" bar! I think if your looking for a great saw for the money this saw is a BEAST!! March 4, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love this saw The vibration dampening system is wonderful, I love the power and the reliability so far. I would highly recommend this saw to anyone looking for a saw in this size. February 13, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by just what i was looking for i was looking for a saw to replace a old one that will be my backup. after looking at a lot of brands i bought a 455 and i hated it. that's when i decided to spend a little more money and get a real saw that i think will last me many years. the best part is that it uses about half the fuel that the 455 did. i know a lot of folks would say you should spend more and get a pro saw but i really do not need that. i also looked at the ms 311 and the added weight made me go with the ms291. Rated 5 out of 5 by Super chainsaw I cut firewood as a side job. I got this saw in October, and have ran almost 8 gallons of gas through it. It's a great saw great spring AV, You can easily cut a full load of hard wood on one tank of gas. Has all kinds of power, It will take about 8 tanks of gas to get fully broke in. The people I supply firewood for depend on me to warm there house, and I take that job very seriously. Stihl has a great dealer support if you need it. And also build great equipment, I am very happy with my new saw, as I am with my other stihl equipment. Also their RS chain is the best you can buy, I have ran it all. If I can give one tip to people new to cutting, when you have a brand new chain, take a close look at it, feel it, remember how it feels and looks and cuts, When it don't cut like new it needs sharpened. Don't keep cutting, as a rule touch your chain up with each tank of gas. I have a couple of videos on youtube to give you a idea of what this saw can do. read the Manuel, and be safe. Rated 5 out of 5 by -15 degree! The MS291 warmed us up. I picked up the MS291 earlier this fall on a whim. Heating oil is getting pricey and I figured it would be a good idea to put some firewood up for the long Michigan winter. The first time out I was helping a farmer buddy of mine clear a fence row of some cherry trees that were standing dead and very hard. No Problem! However about an hour into it I decided to cut an unseen rock, and nuked the chain. The dealer replaced it free of charge, I guess they either felt sorry for me or just wanted to get my dumb butt out of their store. The last time I used it, was on a hunting trip on the shore of Lake Superior. It got cold, like freeze warm water in the air kind of cold. We NEEDED some more fire wood to heat the camp. The MS291 fired up, a little bit harder than usual, and after a slow warm up felled two dead pine trees, limed, and chopped into length. I was warm after all that cutting and the camp was warm for a few days, until I had to do it all over again. I am so glad this thing is so well engineered and cuts so well. December 11, 2013
